Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani
What do I intend when I send blessings on the Prophet (Allah bless him & give him peace) in the tashahhud?
Answer:
Assalamu alaikum,
In the tashahhud, one intends to greet Allah Most High, and send salams to the Prophet (Allah bless him & give him peace), oneself, and the righteous.
This is the more correct position in the Hanafi school, as chosen by Imam al-Tumurtashi in his Tanwir al-Absar, by Imam `Ala’ al-Din al-Haskafi (Allah have mercy on him) in his Durr al-Mukhtar, and confirmed by Imam Ibn Abidin (Allah have mercy on him) in his supercommentary, Radd al-Muhtar. This is based on the position stated in al-Mujtaba, a relied-upon early fatwa collection. [Radd al-Muhtar `ala al-Durr al-Mukhtar Sharh Tanwir al-Absar, 1.342-343, Bulaq ed.]
This was the position chosen by Imam al-Shurunbulali in his Hashiyat al-Durar (famous as al-Shurunbulaliyya), as well as in his Imdad al-Fattah Sharh Nur al-Idah and its abridgement, Maraqi al-Falah.
Imam Najm al-Din Ibn Nujaym also chose it in his al-Bahr al-Ra’iq Sharh Kanz al-Daqa’iq [1.343]
Tumurtashi said in his Tanwir al-Absar:
“And one intends address by the words of the tashahhud, not mere reporting [f: of the address of the Prophet (Allah bless him & give him peace) during the Ascent to Heaven].”
Haskafi explained in his Durr al-Mukhtar:
“As if one greets Allah Most High, and sends salams to His Prophet (Allah bless him & give him peace), and to himself, and the righteous (awliya).”
Ibn Abidin approved this in his Radd al-Muhtar.
And Allah alone gives success.
