Do I pay Zakat if I have more than one home?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

I am in possession of 3 homes. I do not have any debt on these homes by the Grace of ALLAH. At each home I have my and my wife’s family members staying in and I do not take any rent as such. I do not stay in any of these homes. How will my Zakat be calculated based on the fact that I do own the 3 homes?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Walaikum assalam wa rahmatullah,

Zakat is not due on property unless it is specifically with the express intent of trade–even if one has more than one home. (Ibn Abidin, Radd al-Muhtar) However, zakat would be due on any earning (e.g. in the future, if you charge rent) from the house and from the proceeds of the sale of the house (if ever sold).
