Fasting: Spitting out after washing one’s mouth when fasting

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

To what extent is one expected to spit water out while fasting. i.e. lets say that someone rinsed his mouth in wudu. Now technically speaking water molecules would be there in his mouth and may also go in the stomach. How does he make sure that his fasting is not invalid, i.e. how many times and with what strength should he spit the water out.

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Assalamu alaikum,

It is actually very simple, Alhamdulillah:

1. The mere spitting out of the water one washed one’s mouth with is enough. Any potentially remaining water is of no legal consideration in terms of the validity of one’s fast. [`Ala’ al-Din Abidin, al-Hadiyya al-`Ala’iyya]

2. However, it is recommended (but not obligatory) to spit out once more just to be cautious. [ibid.]

3. Making it a habit to spit out water wudu more than once would be going against the sunna and blameworthy, for it is acting on the baseless misgivings of Shaytan, whom we have been commanded by Allah to oppose.

Allah Most High said,

“…and follow not the footsteps of the devil. Lo! he is an open enemy for you.” [2.168]

Rabia al-Adawiyya (Allah be pleased with her) said that the Qur’anic verse about taking Satan as one’s enemy was the verse that made her most hopeful, for it is as if Allah is telling us, “And I am your Beloved, so love Me!” [Sayyidi Abd al-Ghani al-Nabulsi, al-Hadiqa al-Nadiyya Sharh al-Tariqa al-Muhammadiyya]

Walaikum assalam wa rahmatullah,

Faraz Rabbani.
