Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani
My question concerns the voluntary prayer (Nafl). When you make intention for Nafl, is it necessary to say the salaah for which you are praying the Nafl.
Answer:
Walaikum assalam wa rahmatullah,
1. Voluntary (nafl) prayers (including the confirmed sunnas) are all valid simply with the intention to pray. It is not necessary to specify what one is praying.
2. It is superior and more virtuous to define one’s intention in such prayers, as well, by specifying what one is praying, such as: ‘the sunna of maghrib,’ ‘duha prayer,’ or ‘tahajjud.’

And Allah alone gives success.
See attached answer(s) for the fiqh of intentions.
Wassalam.
Faraz Rabbani.
