I am a student at University and my parents pay for my tuition. Recently I have started a part time job to pay my rent and manage a few other expenses, but at the end of the month I have about $30 left in my pocket. Every year my parents pay for my part of the sacrifice on Eid-ul-Adha. But this time, since I have my own income, I was wondering whether I should have paid for my part of the slaughtered animal. The sacrifice has already been made, and my father paid for my portion in full. So even if I was supposed to pay for the animal, would it be ok if I made the payment now? Please advise.
Al-Salam `alaykum
What is required from a person who possesses Nisab on the days of sacrifice is the offering of the sacrifice of a goat or sheep or to take a seventh part in the sacrifice of a cow, bull or buffalo. This sacrifice is valid whether the person pays for it with his own wealth or not.
Thus, in your case, the sacrifice that your father paid for on your behalf is valid and you are not required to repeat it now. However if you intend to contribute the money for your sacrifice in the future, it is indeed commendable but not a condition for its validity. It is also commendable for you to do the sacrifice yourself and not designate somebody else to do so.
Allah Ta`ala knows best.
