Greeting scholars who don’t want to be kissed on the hand or stood up for

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

What is the correct adab one should have when greeting Shaykh’s? I have seen people go to kiss the hand of a Shaykh but the Shaykh seemed to pull his hand away. Also if a Shaykh has asked for the students to not stand up when he enters the room, is it still better to stand up for him even though he asked not to or is better to obey his wishes?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Walaikum assalam wa rahmatullah,

In both cases, one initially follows the general dictates of propriety (i.e. trying to kiss the scholar’s hand and standing for them), even if they say otherwise.

However, if they insist in refusing both, then propriety would be in following their wishes.

And Allah alone gives success.

Wassalam,

Faraz Rabbani
