Is it right to follow Tableegh Jammat’s teaching on supplication to graves?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftisays.com
Asslam aliakum

I am strictly following on Hanifi Mahabas, and proud to be a Hanifi and father, forefather belongs to same, but I have read in Qur’an Allah say:

“And Allah has beautiful Names, so cal upon him by them, and leave the company of those who deviate concerning his names. They will be recompensed for what they used to do (sooratul-Araaf 7:180)

And our great imam Abu Haneefah said, ‘it is detested for the supplicate too say, ‘I ask You by the right of so and so,’ or, ‘By the right of your prophets and Messengers, and by the right of the Sacred House and the Scared Sanctuary.’ (sharhul-Aqeedatut-Tahaawiyyah (p.234) and ithaafus-Saadaatul-Mustaqeem (2/285) and sharhul-Fiqhil-Akbar (p.198) of al-Qaaree)

And Abu Haneefah said, ‘it is not befitting for anyone to call upon Allah, except by him, and it is even more detestable for him to say: By the junctures of Hon our from your throne, or ‘By the Right of Your Creation’ Al-fiqhul-Absat (p.56). this is what we know worshipping or supplicating from Quran and Imam Abu hanifa Rah..

What is the teaching of Tableegh Jammat in Fadhail Amaal chapter Fadhail Durood, p.97 incident no (hikayat) 35: the Messenger of Allah (allegedly) said: “Whoever wants something from anyone should go to grave and supplicate to Allah for it.

Again on p.109, incident # (Hikayat) -48, Fadhail Durood (last chapter Fadhail Amaal, Vol I) sh. Abu Khair Qattah said that: I went to Madinah and stayed there for five days but did not achieve the pleasure and satisfaction. I went to the graves of the Prophet, Hadhrat Abu Bakr and Hadhrat Umar and said “O Messenger of Allah I am your guest tonight.’ then I left the place and slept behind the minbar. I saw in my dream that the prophet of Allah with Abu Bakr on his right, Umar on his left and Ali was in front of them all. Hadrat Ali then shook me and said that the messenger of Allah has come to visit me I got up and kissed the prophet between his eyes. The Messenger of Allah then gave me a piece of bread which I ate half and when I woke up the other half was in my hand.

When our Qur’an and Imam Abu Hanifa rah is saying something, but this Tableegh Jammat teaching against our Qur’an and Imam Abu Hanifa, which is right? Give me Clear Answer to this Question?

Answer
There is no contradiction in the beliefs of Imam Abu Hanifa and ‘The tableeghi jamaat movement- as it is by no means a set of different beliefs- but rather a movement to propagate and spread Islam worldwide.
Both have zero tolerance for the committing of ‘shirk’ and assosiating partners with Allah in ALL forms.

‘Waseelah’ is the word used to describe the point you are trying to make. Waseelah means to supplicate (make dua) to Allah Ta’ala by presenting the auspicious proximity to Allah Ta’ala enjoyed by either A’maal-e-Saalihah (Righteous Deeds) or Pious beings such as the Ambiyaa and Auliya. In simple terms, Waseelah is to make dua as follows: “O Allah! Accept my dua for the sake of Your Nabi…..(or a certain Wali)…..or (a certain good deed).”It is understood in this concept that the being which is stated as the Waseelah is not the bestower of the need. Allah Ta’ala has not delegated power of bestowal to the being of Waseelah. He is the Sole Bestower.

There is absoloutly nothing wrong with this method of supplication and it has been adopted by the Sahaabah (R.A) and our pious predecessors. Please refer to the following narration of Sahih Al Bukhari (R.A):

Hadhrat Anas (radhiyallahu anhu) said:
“When it used o be drought, then Umar Bin Khattaab (R.A) would supplicate for rain through the medium of Abbaas Bin Abdul Muttalib (R.A)). He would say (i.e. make dua):”O Allah! Verily, we used to invoke the waseelah of our Nabi to You and You bestowed rain to us. (Now) we invoke You by virtue of the uncle of our Nabi.therefore, bestow rain to us.” He (Anas) said: Then rain was bestowed to them.”
(Bukhaari)

As far as the quotation of Imam Abu Hanifa, firstly Imam Abu Hanifa is not recorded to have refuted the above Hadith as far as we know and thus to suggest that he believed otherwise would be a gross misinterpretation of the quotation. Secondly, the principles of ruling within the shariah are based on four things viz:

1) Quran
2)Sunnah
3) Ijmaa
4) Qiyaas

When the Quran and Sunnah have alreadly established a ruling there is no room for Qiyaas which is when the scholars make use of their own intellect whilst comparing with similar Islamic teachings in order to produce a ruling.
Hence the case above is quite clear and decided upon to be permisible.

The final incident which you mention as related in Fazaaile Aamaal written by Hadhrat Sheikh Maulana Zakaria (R.A) is part of a dream. The reason for including this anecdote is for laypersons like ourselves to appreciate the closeness to Allah and His Messenger (SAW) enjoyed by the pious that they are blessed with His vision in their dreams. Thus it is pointless to include this incident in order to question the validity of ‘Waseelah’ not dreams.

And Allah (SWT) knows best.
