The Sharia Implication of Not Performing Salaat with Jamaat

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: I would like to know what is the shari implication on not performing salaat with jamaat. I noticed that many men who are fit and able do not make any attempt to come to the musjid for salaat with jamaat. Some even live within walking distance to the musjid. Also what I find very strange they are regular with work and other sporting activities.

Bismillaah

A: Discarding the jamaat salaah for no valid reason is a serious sin in Shariah. There are many Ahaadeeth in this respect.

Once Nabi (sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) mentioned that if it was not for the fear of the womenfolk and children I would have appointed someone in my place to lead the salaah whilst I go out with the youngsters and set alight the homes of those who discard the jamaat salaah.

In yet another hadeeth it is reported that Nabi (sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) said that the salaah of the neighbour of the musjid will not be accepted if he performs it at home.

For a detailed explanation on the topic of discarding jamaat salaah refer to chapter of Salaah in Fazaail-e-A`maal written by Shaikh-ul-Hadeeth Hazrat Moulana Muhammad Zakariyya Saheb (r.a.).
