Making dua for something that seems improbable

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: Is it disliked to make dua for something that is highly improbable?

Secondly, does making dua such as ‘oh Allah, grant jannah to all of the ummah’ count as improbable since some people will inevitably go to jahannam? Or asking Allah to protect all of the our brothers and sisters from Allah all sorts of harm – is this also improbable?

Bismillaah

A: Rasulullah (Sallalahu Alaihi Wasallam) was sent as a Rasul to the entire mankind. In the Quraan, Allah Ta’ala commands Rasulullah (Sallalahu Alaihi Wasallam) to proclaim:

يأيها الناس إني رسول الله إليكم جميعا

O mankind! I am a messenger of Allah (sent) to all of you (the entire mankind).

From this verse of the Quraan, we understand that the Risaalat (prophethood) of Rasulullah (Sallalahu Alaihi Wasallam) was general to all of mankind.  Accordingly, Rasulullahs (Sallalahu Alaihi Wasallam) effort was general and directed to all the people. Hence, we find that Rasulullah (Sallalahu Alaihi Wasallam) would say to the people: O people, say the Kalimah and you all will be successful. Just as Rasulullahs (Sallalahu Alaihi Wasallam) effort was directed to all the people, the  Dua he made  was also general for all the people. We find in the Mubaarak Hadith that Rasulullah (Sallalahu Alaihi Wasallam) made Dua for all the people saying:
اللهم اهد قومي O Allah, bless all my people with Hidaayat. Among the people were the likes of Abu Jahal and Abu Lahab regarding whom  Rasulullah (Sallalahu Alaihi Wasallam) was informed that they will not believe. Despite this, Rasulullah (Sallalahu Alaihi Wasallam) continued to invite them and to make Dua for them among the Dua he made for the entire Ummah.

Similarly, we have been commanded in the Mubaarak Hadith to wish well for the entire ummah. Making dua that Allah Ta’ala grants every ummati hidaayat is in conformity to the command of wishing well for the entire ummah.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
