Can Allah Ta’ala Speak Lies?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Mahmoodiyah

Question:

Deobandis hold that Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala did not tell lies nor He tells lies but He can tell lies. The reason ( a shameful one ) they give is that if He can’t, then it means that it is not in His Qudrat and according to Aaya-e-kareema INNALLAHA A’LA KULLE SHYIN QADEER He is Qadir on every thing. Deobandis were severally told that defects are not supposed to be under His Qudrat, they ask for references for this principle. Please send me these references and the Hukm of Shari’ah on a person who still believes that Allah Subhanahu can tell lies.
2. Such a person was asked as to why Deobandis restrict Allah’s ( muadhAllah ) possibility of only telling lies and why not to extend the chain of questions—-can He beget children, can He become sick, can He commit crimes, can He die? This chain of question is not asked to desecrate Allah Subhanahu but to silence them and divert them to thinking that for each of the question in the chain if they answer “YES” they should realise that they are further blundering in Aqaaid leading them to Kufr. These questions are certainly not asked them with the intent that they should commit kufr but to show them that they run the risk of committing kufr if they say “YES” to these questions, but they keep quiet and do not answer. What is the hukm for these Deobandis who believe the possibility of Allah’s telling lies.
Bayyinu wa tujiru.

Firstly, you should find out whether those phrases which you have attributed to the Deobandis are found under this topic in the form of an important Mas’ala in their books or was it written as an explanation of another Mas’ala.

“Allah is All-Able to do everything.” This phrase implies that Allah is able to accomplish everything He intends. (Tafseer Roohul Ma’aani. Vol. 1, Page 180, An-Nibraas, commentary of Sharhul ‘Aqaaid, Page 123.)

The belief of Ahlus Sunnah Wal Jamaa’ah is that Allah is pure of all disgraceful characteristics. It is therefore not permissible to attribute any disgraceful characteristic to Allah. Attributing other names and qualities to Allah, apart from those which are mentioned in the Qur’an and Ahaadith is not permissible. Allah says in the Qur’an,” And (all) the Most Beautiful Names belong to Allah, so call Him by them and leave the company of those who belie or deny (or utter impious speech against) His names. They will be requited for what they used to do. (Al-A’raaf, verse 180.)

The Imam of Deobandis, Hadhrat Mufti Rashid Ahmad Gangohi gave the verdict that Allah’s Being is pure of the quality of lies. Allah forbid! There is no doubt of lies in the speech of Allah.

That person who believes or says that Allah speaks lies is definitely out of the fold of Islaam. He is in opposition to the Qur’an, Ahaadith and the Ijma’ of the Ummat too. He is definitely not a believer.

And Allah Ta’ala knows best
