Question:
Q1-IS IT PERMISSIBLE TO GO EXERCISE CLASSES WHICH ARE HELD SEPARATE FOR WOMEN AND SEPARATE FOR MEN BUT IN THE BACK ROUND THERE IS MUSIC IE THE EXERCISE IS DONE WITH MUSIC BUT NO ATTENTION IS PUT TOWARDS LISTENING TO THE MUSIC?
Q2-A MADRASAH HAS MADE A RULE THAT IF STUDENTS FEES ARE NOT PAID ON TIME IE AT THE END OF EVERY MONTH THEN FIVE POUNDS ADMISSION FEE WOULD HAVE TO BE PAID ALL THE TIME IS THIS PERMISSIBLE? IF NOT PLEASE EXPLAIN WHY?
- It will be permissible to attend exercise classes held separately for both the sexes as long as it does not distract them from their Shar’i obligations and they do not become involved in any unlawful act. In your case exercising with music is unlawful therefore it will not be permissible to attend such classes.
- According to Imam Ahmad (R.A.A.) and Imam Yusuf (R.A.A.) and most of the contemporary jurists to impose “Ta’zeer bil Maal” (monetary fine) is permissible, therefore in this case if the student is well to do and delays the payment of the fees, the student will then be liable to pay a fine. However, if the student is destitute then the student should be given some grace. (Islamic Finance, Mufti Taqi Usmani, Page 134-135)
