Assalamualaikum Sir,

In Islam telling lies is forbidden. My aunt always speaks the truth. But she speak lie which do not harm anyone. She speak lie regarding on one matter to protect her Status in society and relatives.

Is this type of lie a sin?

Answer

Wa’alaykum as Salam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu,

All types of lies have been strongly prohibited in Shariah. There is no distinction between lies which harms others and lies which do not apperently harm anyone. All are impermissible and sinful.

As Muslims, we should endeavour to be truthful and honest. Once a person gets a reputation of lying, even in seemingly trivial issues which does not cause harm, he looses his trust and people could disbelieve him in more important issues, when he might be speaking the truth.

In your aunts present case, she should discuss her case with a pious scholar, who will advise her how to word her explanation in this particular issue to protect her status without speaking a lie.

And Allaah Ta’aala knows best
