Is there kaffarah for a voluntary fast?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by IslamicSolutions.org

Shortened Question:

Is there kaffarah for a voluntary fast?

Question:

Do I have to fast or pay the kaffarah for a voluntary fast that I broke?

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Kaffarah literally means penance, atonement, expiation.

If one breaks the voluntary fast, one only has to make qadah (repeat) of that fast.

There is no further penalty for breaking a voluntary fast.[1]
