Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) waits for three days

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

Where is the following Hadith found and can it be quoted? If possible, what is the lesson from this Hadith?

Abdullah ibn Abil Hamsa was a companion who narrates:

“Prior to the commencement of the divine mission of Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) [i.e. Nubuwwah], I dealt with him in a business transaction and there was still something due to him. I promised him that I will bring it there shortly. However, I forgot and remembered after three days. When I returned to the meeting place, Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) was still there. He (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said nothing more to me than, “You have subjected me to an inconvenience as I have been waiting for you for the past three days.”

Imam Abu Dawud (rahimahullah) has recorded this Hadith with a weak chain.

(Sunan Abi Dawud, Hadith: 4957)

The Hadith is suitable to quote to explain the exemplary conduct of Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) as is the rule with Hadiths of this nature.

The commentators explain that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) waited there in order to fulfill his promise that he made of waiting. He did not wait merely to receive the amount due to him. This Hadith further portrays Nabi’s (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) exemplary conduct even prior to receiving Nubuwwah. It was due to incidents of this nature that he became renowned as ‘the truthful and the trustworthy.’

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
