Virtue of a woman whose first child is a daughter

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

I wanted to ask the authenticity of the following Hadith:

من بركة المرأة ابتكارها بالأنثى

“Wathilah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that he (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam) said: “Amongst the blessing of a woman is that the first born be a girl.”

Ibn Asakir.

Answer

There exists various versions of this narration. Likewise its attribution and authenticity is also debated. However its meaning is supported as explained below.

‘Allamah Sakhawi (rahimahullah) has declared these narrations as weak in Al-Maqasidul Hasanah, Hadith: 1205.

This is also the verdict of ‘Allamah Zurqani (rahimahullah) in Mukhtasarul Maqasid, Hadith: 1102.

‘Allamah Suyuti (rahimahullah) has declared it as not authentic.

(See: Kashful Khafa, Hadith: 2658)

Also see: Tanzihush Shari’ah, vol.2 pg.202 & Faydul Qadir, Hadith: 8237.

After a lengthy discussion, ‘Allamah Sakhawi (rahimahullah) comments: ‘If daughters didn’t bring barakah (blessing) the blessed progeny of Rasulullah (sallallahu’alayhi wasallam) wouldn’t have spread through his daughter.’

(Al-Maqasidul Hasanah, Hadith: 1205)

Note: This doesn’t mean that those women whose first child is a son, are not blessed.

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
