Meaning of ‘Bayt’ in the Hadith of Mi’raj

Which house does ‘Al Bayt’ refer to in the following narration?

‘Bayna ana ‘indal Bayt’

Sahih Muslim, Kitabul Iman.

Answer

This is part of the lengthy Hadith regarding the incident of Mi’raj recorded by Imam Bukhari and Imam Muslim (rahimahumallah).

(Sahih Bukhari, Hadith: 3887, Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 164)

‘Al Bayt’ here means the Ka’bah. The version in Sahih Bukhari has the words ‘While I was lying down in the Hatim…’

There are several other words that have been used in the different versions of this Hadith. See Fathul Bari (Hadith: 3887, vol. 7 pg. 204) where Hafiz Ibn Hajar (rahimahullah) has reconciled between these versions.

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
