I saw the following quote:
“It is obvious that the words ‘and Al-‘Aqib is he after whom there is no prophet’ have been added as a commentary by a companion or someone afterwards.” (Mirqat, Volume 5, Page 376).
How authentic is this statement which was said by Mulla Ali Qari?
Answer
Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) himself has said that Al ‘Aqib is one of his names, as recorded in Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim.
(Sahih Bukhari, Hadith: 3532, 4896 and Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 2354)
Some versions of this Hadith (Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 2354) explain the meaning of the word Al ‘Aqib. Mulla ‘Ali Al Qari (rahimahullah) has indeed stated that the explanation of the word ‘Al ‘Aqib is from the Sahabi (radiyallahu ‘anhu) or one of the other narrators of this Hadith. Many other commentators including Hafiz Ibn Hajar Al ‘Asqalani (rahimahullah) have also mentioned this.
The explanation of the name ‘Al ‘Aqib’ is that person after whom there is no Nabi.’
