The du’a of Sayyiduna Anas (radiyallahu ‘anhu) for protection from Hajjaj

There is a narration wherein Sayyiduna Anas (radiyallahu ‘anhu) was brought in front of Hajjaj ibn Yusuf who intended to harm him. Sayyiduna Anas said to Hajjaj ‘You will not be able to harm me due to a du’a Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) taught me which is a protection from Shaytan, tyrant rulers and predatory animals’.

What is the source and authenticity of the narration?

Answer

Imam Ibnus Sunni (rahimahullah) has recorded this narration through a very weak chain.

(‘Amalul Yawmi Wal Laylah, Hadith: 347)

Imam Tabarani (rahimahullah) has also recorded this narration with difference in the wording (Kitabud Du’a, Hadith: 1059). ‘Allamah ‘Iraqi (rahimahullah) has declared this chain weak (Al Mughni ‘An Hamlil Asfar, Hadith: 1190). The Arabic text of this version is as follows:

And Allah Ta’ala knows best.
