Translation of a passage on fatherly love

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

Can you please tell me the meaning of this?

وقال زيد بن علي بن الحسين لابنه يحيى: أن الله تبارك وتعالى لم يرضك لي فأوصاك بي، ورضيني لك فلم يوصيني بك

Answer

Zaid ibn ‘Ali ibn Husayn said to his son; Yahya:

‘Allah wasn’t satisfied with how you would treat me, so he specifically instructed you to care for me.

Whereas He was pleased with how I would treat you, and therefore didn’t instruct me to care for you.’

This illustrates the natural fatherly love that everyone experiences. Due to this, there was no need to directly command the father to care for his child- as it comes naturally.

On the other hand, Allah Ta’ala directly commands the children to be kind to their parents…

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best,
