Hadith.? ‘Recognizing Allah is my capital, intellect is the root of my faith…’

Question

I want to enquire about the strength of Sayyiduna ‘Ali (radiyallahu ‘anhu)’s narration found in Qadhi Iyadh’s renowned “Ash-Shifa’ Bi Ta’rif Huquqil Mustafa”.

Sayyiduna ‘Ali (radiyallahu ‘anhu) asks Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) about his path and Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) responds with 17 short statements like “Love is my foundation”, “Trust is my treasure” and “Conviction is my sustenance etc.

Can you please cite the whole Hadith and elaborate on it’s strength?

Answer

The complete Hadith is as follows:

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) is reported to have said:

‘Recognizing Allah is my capital, intellect is the root of my faith, love is my foundation, enthusiasm to meet Allah is my conveyance, remembrance of Allah is my friend, trust is my treasure, sorrow is my companion, knowledge is my weapon, patience is my mantle, contentment is my booty, poverty is my pride, abstention is my art, conviction is my strength, truth is my intercessor, obedience is my sufficiency, jihad is my way and the coolness of my eyes is in my Salah’

(Kitabush Shifa, vol. 1 pg. 187)

‘Allamah ‘Iraqi (rahimahullah) has stated that he has not come across a chain of narrators for this Hadith.

(Al Mughni ‘An Hamlil Asfar, Hadith: 4225)

Hafiz Ibn Hajar has stated that this Hadith has no basis. ‘Allamah Suyuti has classified this Hadith as a fabrication.

(Refer: Nasimur Riyadh, vol. 2 pg. 428 and Ithafus Sadah Al Muttaqin, vol. 9 pg. 684. Also see Tadhkiratul Mawdu’at of ‘Allamah Muhammad Tahir Al Fatani, pg. 87)

This Hadith is therefore not suitable to quote.

Note: The last part of the Hadith, ‘The coolness of my eyes is in Salah‘ is authentic and proven in other narrations.

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best
