A concise du’a which sums up the good of this world and the Hereafter

Kindly provide the authenticity of the narration wherein Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said, O Allah forgive me, have mercy, protect me and grant me sustenance. He then said this is the best of both worlds.

Answer

Imam Muslim (rahimahullah) has recorded this Hadith in his Sahih. The narration is therefore authentic.

“A person had come to Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) asking what words to use when supplicating to Allah? Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said. say: ‘O Allah forgive me, have mercy upon me, protect me and provide me sustenance’. Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) then joined four of his fingers except his thumb and said, these four [du’as] combines your Dunya and Akhirah”

(Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 2697)

The Arabic text of the du’a:

اللهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي، وَارْحَمْنِي، وَعَافِنِي، وَارْزُقْنِي

Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) would also teach a similar du’a to new Muslims. (Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 2697)

And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
