Question
Respected Mufti Saheb,
I hope you are well.
I am a retired teacher. On joining the school, it was compulsory to contribute to the National Pension Scheme Authority(NAPSA) a certain percentage of my salary. The company also contributed on a monthly basis to the funds. Since the inception the school and I have contributed for example a K100 000 over the few years I have been employed.
This amount is invested by NAPSA in building shopping malls and other avenues which I do not have knowledge of. (They might me interest based banks too). I did not have any option to choose in which avenues to invest the money. After retirement I was payed out K500 000. Is the entire pay out Halal for me or only the amount contributed by myself and the school?

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.
If it was compulsory upon you to contribute to the pension scheme in reference, the entire pay-out will be permissible. In the example cited, the K100,000 will be a return of your salary and K400,000 will be regarded as a gift from the company. You are not responsible on how and where the funds were invested.1
