30 Parts of the Qur’aan

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by DaruliftaaZambia.com

Question

Assalamu Alyekum,

An Indian Islamic scholar Maulana Wahiduddin Khan writes in his translation that “To meet the needs of recitation, the Quran was divided into 30 parts. These parts were finally set in order under the guidance of the Angel Gabriel, through whom God had revealed the Quran.” Is this statement true? I think the 30 part thing has nothing to with angel Gabriel.

Could you please help me have some references from Quran and Hadith literature on this topic? Thank you.

Answer

Mufti Taqī ‘Uthmāni states in his book ‘An Approach to the Qur’ānic Sciences’:

“Today, the Quran is divided into thirty parts (Ajzā – plural of Juz). This division in parts has nothing to do with the meaning of the Qur’ān, but has been done as a teaching aid for children, in thirty equal parts. Thus, we see that there are places where a part ends with an unfinished statement. It is difficult to say with certainty as to who made this division in thirty parts. Some people think that during the transcription of the Qur’ān Sayyidina ‘Uthman Radiyallahu ‘Anhu had got it written in thirty parts and hence this division dates back to his time. But I could not find any proof of this theory in the works of earlier scholars. However, ‘Allāmah Badruddin Zarkashī has written that the thirty parts of the Quran have been in popular use and they customarily appear in the Qur’ānic transcripts used in schools. It appears that this division was made after the period of the Companions to facilitate teaching of the Quran. Allah knows best.”[1]
