Delaying A Marriage

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Darulifta Azaadville

Question:

I was supposed to get married during this lockdown but since it was cancelled due to our country’s restrictions I opted for a quick nikaah because of the hadith : Ali bin Abi Talib رضي الله عنه narrated that :

The Prophet صَلّى اللهُ عليهِ واٰله وسلّم said to him: ‘Ali! Three are not to be delayed: Salat when its time comes, a funeral whet it is present, and the (marriage of a) single woman when there is an equal for her.”[Tirmidhi 171]

But the Wali of the girl informed me that it must be postponed because certain Ahadith like this can’t be acted upon during the pandemic is that true?

Answer:

A person is only obligated to get married according to the Sunnah of the Prophet. That Sunnah calls for a simple Nikah and Walimah. What is required in today’s time by society is all extravagance and waste. Since it is still possible to hold a simple Nikah and Walimah in these times, then the Hadith can be acted upon.

It is incorrect to abandon what is mentioned in the Hadith and delay the marriage just so that once the lockdown has been lifted, impermissible customs and traditions can be carried out.
