Khilaal of the Beard

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by CouncilofUlama.co.za

Q: When making Wudhu, should one wash the beard or make Masah of the beard?

A: If one has a sparse beard i.e. the skin below the beard is visible, it will be necessary for water to reach the facial skin. So the beard together with facial hair will be washed.

On the other hand, if one has a dense beard, then one will make Khilaal of the beard. [Radul Muhthaar Vol 1 Page 117]

The correct method of making Khilaal of the beard is: the fingers of the right hand (with the back of the palm touching the neck) should be entered into the beard below the chin. Khilaal will start from the roots of the beard hairs, moving towards its tips.

Thereafter, Khilaal will be done of the right side of the beard, followed by the left side. [Fatawaa Mahmoodiya V5/P50]
