Missing Sunnats to Perform Qadha

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by CouncilofUlama.co.za

Q: My question is related to the right way of performing salat that I have missed since puberty.

I have gone through few posts that mentions: we are required to pray all the Fardh and Wajib Salah since we attained puberty. But I wanted to know if the following way is permissible.

Usually, in Hanafi, we pray sunnah and nafil (except Fajr and Asr) after Fardh salah. What I know is that Fardh salah is mandatory which everyone needs to perform else it is a major sin. Sunnah and nafil salahs are optional and are prayed to gain more rewards. Please correct me if I am wrong. So below is what I want to ask:

Is it permissible, if after every Fardh salah, instead of praying my sunnah, I pray the missed salahs and not pray sunnah/nafil? Because on the day of Judgement, the Fardh salah will be taken into account first then comes sunnah/nafil.

Or is there any better way to perform the missed salahs as the number would be in thousands ?

A: It is necessary to perform sunnatul muakkadah salats. To miss out sunnatul muakkadah salats is a sin. It is not appropriate to miss out sunnatul muakkadah salats to save time to make up for qadha salats.

There is no qadha salats for missed sunnat and nafl salat.

We advise you to put an effective system in place according to your personal circumstances to make qadha of you missed farz and witr salats.

One easy effective way is to perform one qadha salah after each farz salats.

And Allah Ta’āla Knows Best
