Marwan ibn Hakam, Sahabah were rightly guided

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Askimam.org

I want to know if Marwan bin Hakam was a good Sahabah?

Answer

In the Name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salaamu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullaahi wa-barakaatuh.

At the outset, we wish to point out that every Sahaabi of Rasulullaah (Sallallaahu ‘alaihi wasallam) is upright and honest and is declared as a measure for our Imaan by Allaah Ta’aala Himself[1]. Consider the following verses of the Qur’aan:

Translation: “Bring Imaan like how the people have brought imaan.” (Al-Baqarah v.13)

People referred to in this verse are the illustrious Sahaabah (Radhiyallaahu ‘anhum). Allaah Ta’aala declared them as the hallmark and measure of bringing Imaan correctly.

Translation: “They are the ones whose hearts Allaah has tested for righteousness. For them is forgiveness and great reward.” (Al-Hujuraat v.3)

Allaah Ta’aala states in this verse that He tested the Sahaabah (Radhiyallaahu ‘anhum) and they passed the exam with distinction, thereby earning His forgiveness and Jannah.

Translation: “Those are the ones Allaah has guided, and those are people of understanding.” (Az-Zumar v.18)

Allaah Ta’aala makes it clear in this verse that the illustrious Sahaabah (Radhiyallaahu ‘anhum) were indeed rightly guided. To assume otherwise would be going against the Qur’aan.

Translation: “Muhammad is the Messenger of Allaah; and those with him are forceful against the disbelievers, merciful among themselves. You see them bowing and prostrating [in prayer], seeking bounty from Allaah and [His] pleasure. Their mark is on their faces from the trace of prostration. That is their description in the Torah. And their description in the Gospel is as a plant which produces its offshoots and strengthens them so they grow firm and stand upon their stalks, delighting the sowers – so that Allaah may enrage by them the disbelievers. Allaah has promised those who believe and do righteous deeds among them forgiveness and a great reward.” (Al-Fat’h v.29)

Translation: “Certainly was Allaah pleased with the believers (Sahaabah) when they pledged allegiance to you, [O Muhammad], under the tree.” (Al-Fat’h v.18)

Translation: “And [there is a share for] those who came after them (the Sahaabah), saying, ‘Our Lord, forgive us and our brothers who preceded us in faith and put not in our hearts [any] resentment toward those who have believed. Our Lord, indeed You are Kind and Merciful.’” (Al-Hashr v.10)

Translation: “Their Lord gives them good tidings of mercy from Him and approval and of gardens for them wherein is enduring pleasure.” (At-Tawbah v.21)

It is clear from the above verses that Allaah Ta’aala is pleased with the Sahaabah (Radhiyallaahu ‘anhum) and has promised them mercy and forgiveness and has given them glad-tidings of Jannah.

Consider the following Hadith of Rasulullaah (Sallallaahu ‘alaihi wasallam):

Translation: “The best of mankind are my companions.” (Bukhaari 3651)

Translation: “Fear Allaah, fear Allaah in regards to my companions. Do not take them as a target of abuse. Whosoever loves them has indeed loved them for his love for me. And whosoever despises them has indeed despised them for his hate for me. Whoever causes them annoyance has indeed caused me annoyance. And whoever causes me annoyance has indeed caused Allaah annoyance. It is very likely that Allaah will take him to task.”

Translation: “Do not speak ill of my companions, for I swear by Him in Whose Hand is my soul, if one of you were to spend in charity gold, similar in size to Mount Uhud, it would not be equivalent to one of their mudds or even half of it.” (Abu Dawood 4658)

Marwaan ibn Hakam was born in the blessed lifetime of Rasulullaah (Sallallaahualaihi wasallam). However, he was not fortunate to be from the illustrious Sahaabah (Radhiyallaahuanhum) as he did not see Rasulullaah (Sallallaahu ‘alaihi wasallam)[5].

Discussing the merits and demerits of others is void of benefits. Every person should be concerned about his own salvation in the hereafter. On the Day of Judgment, we will not be asked regarding the deeds of other people. We will be questioned about our own imaan and deeds.

And Allaah Ta’aala Knows Best.
