Writing R.I.P (rest in peace) for a non-Muslim after his demise

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: Is it correct to write R.I.P (may he rest in peace) for a non-Muslim after his demise? What does Islam say about this?

A: It is not permissible in Islam to make dua for the forgiveness of a non-Muslim who has died upon kufr. Hence one should refrain from writing (R.I.P) for non-Muslims after their demise.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
