Can students of knowledge touch the Quran without wudu since they will be holding it with them most of the time
Assalamu alaikum,
I pray this finds you in the best of health and spirits.
Students of knowledge should be the people who are most avid to act in the best, most proper, and most scrupulous ways, and to strive to be ambassadors exemplifying the excellence of Divine Guidance and the light of the Prophetic sunna.
Sayyiduna Ali (Allah be pleased with him) reportedly warned that, “People have only turned away from knowledge because of the little they have seen it impact on the lives of those who possess it.”
Thus, students of knowledge must only touch the Qur’an in a state of wudu, and should strive to be in a state of wudu when they study or review. [ Zarnuji, Ta`lim al-Muta`llim; Shurunbulali, Maraqi al-Falah ]
Imam Abu’l Hasan al-Karkhi (Allah have mercy on him), a great Hanafi mujtahid imam, said, “By Allah, we gained this knowledge only through veneration. By Allah, I have never touched a piece of paper without wudu.” [Tahtawi on the Maraqi; Shurunbulaliyya]
Once, Imam Sarkhsi (Allah have mercy on him) had an upset stomach while reviewing his lessons in the middle of a bitter Central Asian winter night and repeated wudu 14 times with cold water, in order to continue studying while in a state of wudu. This relates to even touching materials of Sacred Knowledge, let alone the Word of God Himself. [ibid.]
