The quality of self possessiveness of Sa’d ibn ‘Ubadah (radiyallahu ‘anhu)

This Hadith is recorded in Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim. It is therefore authentic.

The full correct narration is as follows:

1) Sayyiduna Sa’d ibn ‘Ubadah said: “If I were to see a man with my wife [committing adultery], I would strike him with [the sharp side of my sword].’ Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) heard about this and said, ‘Do you marvel at Sa’d’s quality of self possessiveness? I have more self possessiveness than him and Allah has more self possessiveness than me.’”

(Sahih Bukhari, Hadith: 6846)

2) Sayyiduna Sa’d ibn ‘Ubadah said: “If I were to see a man with my wife [committing adultery], I would strike him with [the sharp side of my sword].’ Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) heard about this and said, ‘Do you marvel at Sa’d’s quality of self possessiveness? By Allah! I have more self possessiveness than him and Allah has more self possessiveness than me. It is because of Allah’s self possessiveness that He has forbidden shameful deeds done in open and in secret. There is none who loves to pardon more than Allah and it is for this that He sent those who give good news and warning [i.e. The Ambiya]. There is no one who likes to be praised more than Allah and due to this, Allah has promised Jannah.’”

Note: This narration should not be used as a justification for murder. The Fuqaha (Jurists) have a difference of opinion whether retribution (qisas) will be necessary or not and have further explained the possible scenarios. This should therefore not be viewed as a Fiqh ruling. Kindly consult a Mufti/Darul Ifta for further clarification.

صحيح البخاري (٦٨٤٦) : حدثنا موسى، حدثنا أبو عوانة، حدثنا عبد الملك، عن وراد، كاتب المغيرة، عن المغيرة، قال: قال سعد بن عبادة: لو رأيت رجلا مع امرأتي لضربته بالسيف غير مصفح، فبلغ ذلك النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم فقال: «أتعجبون من غيرة سعد، لأنا أغير منه، والله أغير مني».

صحيح البخاري (٧٤١٦ ) : حدثنا موسى بن إسماعيل التبوذكي، حدثنا أبو عوانة، حدثنا عبد الملك، عن وراد، كاتب المغيرة عن المغيرة، قال: قال سعد بن عبادة: لو رأيت رجلا مع امرأتي لضربته بالسيف غير مصفح، فبلغ ذلك رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم فقال: «أتعجبون من غيرة سعد، والله لأنا أغير منه، والله أغير مني، ومن أجل غيرة الله حرم الفواحش ما ظهر منها وما بطن، ولا أحد  أحب إليه العذر من الله، ومن أجل ذلك بعث المبشرين والمنذرين، ولا أحد أحب إليه المدحة من الله، ومن أجل ذلك وعد الله الجنة».

صحيح مسلم (١٤٩٩ ) : حدثني عبيد الله بن عمر القواريري، وأبو كامل فضيل بن حسين الجحدري، واللفظ لأبي كامل، قالا: حدثنا أبو عوانة، عن عبد الملك بن عمير، عن وراد، كاتب المغيرة، عن المغيرة بن شعبة، قال: قال سعد بن عبادة: لو رأيت رجلا مع امرأتي لضربته بالسيف غير مصفح عنه، فبلغ ذلك رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، فقال: «أتعجبون من غيرة سعد، فوالله لأنا أغير منه، والله أغير مني، من أجل غيرة الله حرم الفواحش، ما ظهر منها، وما بطن، ولا شخص أغير من الله، ولا شخص أحب إليه العذر من الله، من أجل ذلك بعث الله المرسلين، مبشرين ومنذرين، ولا شخص أحب إليه المدحة من الله، من أجل ذلك وعد الله الجنة».
