Remaining in the spot where Salah was performed to attain the du’a of the angels

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by HadithAnswers.com

Question

Is it true that as long as we stay in the same place reading Quran and doing dhikr after having prayed a voluntary or obligatory prayer that Allah Ta’ala sends his special mercy and the angels pray for our forgiveness till we standup from that place?

Answer

Imam Malik (rahimahullah) has recorded a narration on the authority of Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (radiyallahu ‘anhu) that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam) has said:

‘The angels continuously make du’a for one of you as long as he remains in the spot where he performed his salah, until he makes “hadath” saying: “O Allah, forgive him! O Allah, have mercy on him!” Imam Malik [one of the narrators – rahimahullah] said: I believe “hadath” can only be referring to those things which break a person’s wudu.’

(Muwatta Imam Malik, Hadith: 441; Also see: Sahih Bukhari, Hadith: 659, Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 649, and At-Targhib Wat Tarhib, Hadith: 626)

Imam Ibn Khalaf Al-Baji (rahimahullah) has mentioned one of the interpretations of this Hadith to be that it refers to the one who sits in the same place where he has performed Salah either waiting for the next Salah or engaging in some type of dhikr [which includes, but is not restricted to, the recitation of Quran].

(Al-Muntaqa, Hadith: 378; Also see: Sunan Tirmidhi, Hadith: 3235, Mirqat, Hadith: 702, and Awjazul Masalik, Hadith: 368)

Notes:

1. This narration does not mention of Allah Ta’ala sending his special mercies, rather only mention of the Angels is made.

2. Furthermore, this Hadith refers to when a person sits after having performed an obligatory prayer.

3. The ‘Ulama have mentioned that this Hadith is not restricted to having performed Salah in congregation and can also apply to women that pray individually, in the comfort of their homes.

And Allah Ta’ala knows best.
