Another version of the narration stating that a hypocrite will be unable to memorise certain Surahs

Question

Is this Hadith authentic?

Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: “A hypocrite will not be able to memorise the following Surahs: Bara-ah, Yasin, Dukhan, and ‘Amma Yata sa-alun.”

Answer

‘Allamah Haythami (rahimahullah) has referenced the following version of the Hadith which is worded as in your question to Al Mu’jamul Awsat of Imam Tabarani (rahimahullah).

Sayyiduna ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib (radiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: “A hypocrite will be unable to memorise Surahs; Bara-ah, Yasin, Dukhan, and ‘Amma Yata sa-alun [Surah Naba].”

(Majma’uz Zawaid, vol. 7 pg. 157)

However, the wording in my edition of Al Mu’jamul Awsat is slightly different.

(Al Mu’jamul Awsat, Hadith: 7566)

Nevertheless, the chain consists of a discredited narrator and the Hadith has been deemed a fabrication.

(Refer: Dhaylul La-Alil Masnu’ah, vol. 1 pg. 123, Hadith: 134, Tanzihush Shari’ah, vol. 1 pg. 299)
