What is SHAB-E-BARAAT?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by ShariahBoard.org
What is SHAB-E-BARAAT? Please quote the Ahadith relating to this. Are there any Hadith that support performing Special Ibadaat during this Night? Did the Sahabah observe this night?
There were some things that were not being practiced commonly, or had not become in vogue in early times nonetheless they are mentioned in some of the prophetic traditions. In other words, we don’t find such things to be well practiced during the time of the companions but they’re not complete innovations either. Now, one of these things is that night of ‘barat’. The prophet peace be upon him has mentioned the virtues of this night that Allah descends to the first heaven during the day but specially in the last portion of the night. He comes down and he grants the prayers of those who call on to him for forgiveness specifically. The actions are presented to him and decisions are issued from him. It is recommended to fast the next day and to perform warship during this night, and to stay up. People could do this individually and there is no problem with that. The prophet peace be upon him himself went to the highest point of Paradise during this night and he prayed.

There are many innovations seen happen around this night like fireworks, adorning the mosques, conducting gatherings, doing special things for the dead, believing that the spirits will come down or the Angels, and cooking food are all unfounded things which must be avoided.
