Numbers of rak’ats in Taraaweeh prayer?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by ShariahBoard.org
Numbers of rak’ats in Taraaweeh prayer? What about of the Hadith of Mother Aisha regarding tarweeh? Is 20 rakats a hanafi fatwa and does a non Hanafi has to follow the fatwa?
In taraweeh there are 20 rakats, and the Hadith reported by Aisha may Allah be pleased with her is not related to this prayer rather it is related to another prayer of tahajjud. In another words, this prophetic tradition relates to the prayer, which is also in the months outside of the month of Ramadan. Everyone knows that ‘tahajjud’ is prayed in the months outside of the month of Ramadan. In the month of Ramadan we pray an additional prayer, which is known, as ‘taraweeh’ and she didn’t say anything about this prayer. However, she stated that the Prophet peace be upon him used to pray this prayer in the month of Ramadan as well as in the other months.

The consensus with the issue of ‘taraweeh’ being 20 is across the board in all four schools of thought, it is not just an opinion of hanafi school of thought. That’s why we should pray this prayer only in twenties.
