Minimum amount of Haq-e-Mehr

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by ShariahBoard.org

Assalamualaikum,

Can you please let me know what is the minimum amount of Mehr in current era? I was told that it has to be as low as possible per Sunnah. Also if the groom decides to have a higher Mehr amount, is that allowed per Shahriah? If it is allowed, is there a limit on high the Mehr amount can be?

Jazakallah

Minimum amount of Haq-e-Mehr

While fixing the Mehr, one should consider both the financial capacity of the husband and the family status of the woman. Neither the Mehr should be fixed so low that the woman’s family feels disgrace nor it be decided so high that the payment becomes difficult for the husband. Appropriate Mehr should be fixed with mutual consultation. The Mehr of the daughters of the Nabi SAW and most his Mubarak wives is told to be 500 Dirham silver, which is now-a-days called Mehr-e-Fatimi. In view of current weights it comes out to be one kilo, five hundred thirty one gram, and nine hundred milligrams silver. The least amount of Mehr is ten Dirham silver. In view of current weights it comes out to be thirty grams and six hundred eighteen milligrams silver. If there is no difficulty for the husband to pay then bigger amount of Mehr can also be fixed just as Nijashi had paid four thousand Dirham Mehr  to Hazrat Umme Habibah R.A. on behalf of Nabid S.A.W. and Hazrat Umar R.A. had fixed forty thousand Dirham Mehr for Hazrat Umme Kulsoom R.A. Hence, the Mehr can be fixed according to one’s capacity.
