The Jinn: The Reality of Their Existence and How to Protect Ourselves From Them

Question: Please I would appreciate if you can send me materials on Jinn.  Are they in existence? Do they attack human beings? How can one protect himself from their attacks.

I will appreciate if you can give me full detail on this.

Answer: Wa alaikum salam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh,

I pray all is well.  Thank you for your question.

The jinn (sing. jinni) definitely do exist – Allah Most High clearly mentions them in the Qur’an, and that He did not create jinn and humankind except that both of them worship Him.

What we know about the Jinn is that they are a race of unseen beings made from smokeless fire.  They do not primarily interact in our seen world, though occasionally there can be contact between them and human beings, many times with those who involve themselves in idolatrous practices.

Like humankind, they have been given free choice, and the message of Islam was sent to them also.  Shayton (Iblees), for example, is from amongst the Jinn, as are other devils.

Some cultures have come to build up more fear and superstition around the jinn than is realistic; jinn rarely reach out to interact with normal people.  Thus, people should not try to interact with them either, steering clear of doubtful matters involving them.  This is the advice of my shaykh.

For protection against the jinn, one can read Surah al-Fatiha, Ayat al-Kursi and the final verses of Surah al-Baqara [Quran 2:255, 285-286], as well as the last two surahs of the Quran (al-Falaq and al-Nas], especially before sleeping.  One should keep ones clothing, home and body clean from impurities.

One should learn the duas of entering the bathroom and undressing, of having sexual relations, sleeping and seek refuge in Allah from devils by often saying, “A’udhu billahi minash-shayton nir-rajeem”.

Finally, one should guard their 5 daily prayers, ensure their food, drink and income is lawful, shun superstitious matters and places, read the Qur’an daily, and stay away from that which is clearly unlawful.  The most important thing is to remember that only Allah can harm or benefit one.

I ask Allah to protect us all from the evil influences in this world, and from the evil in our own egos.
