Which Type of Hajj Should I Do If I Live in Jeddah?

Question

If I live in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, what types of Hajj can I do? If I already performed an ‘Umra in the month of Shawwal, does my Hajj still count as Hajj al-Ifrad? If not, must I expiate for performing the Hajj al-Tamatt’u even though those living within the miqat only perform Hajj al-Ifrad?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful and Compassionate

Short Answer

There is no requirement of expiation for the one who lives in Jeddah and performs ‘Umra in Shawwal and performs the Hajj that same year. Once they cut their hair for the ‘Umra and returned home to Jeddah, the Hajj they go on to perform is considered a singular Hajj (Hajj al-Ifrad) and not a Hajj al-Tamatt’u. [Maydani; Lubab fi Sharh al-Kitab]

The Background Reasoning

The basis is that the residents of Mecca or any area beyond the Miqat boundary only perform a singular Hajj (Hajj al-Ifrad); there is no legal sanctioning for them to perform the Hajj al-Tamatt’u nor the Hajj al-Qiran. [Ibid.]

Hajj al-Tamatt’u

The definition of Hajj al-Tamatt’u is as follows:

Combining the Ihram and actions of the ‘Umra (or the majority of them) with the Ihram and acts of the Hajj – within the months of Hajj – without a sound return to one’s family. [Ibid.]

Explanation the Definition

What are the ‘Months of Hajj‘?

Looking at the above definition, we see the terms ‘months of Hajj’. The months of Hajj are Shawwal, Dhu al-Qa’da, and the first ten days of Dhu al-Hijja. [Ibid.]

What does ‘Sound Return to the Family’ mean?

A sound return refers to the person returning home while there is no legal requirement for them to return to Mecca. [Ibid.]

That said, if the resident of Jeddah performed the ‘Umra in Shawwal, cut their hair, and returned to Jeddah – there is no legal requirement for them to return, and thus the conditions of Hajj al-Tamatt’u are not met. The Hajj is, therefore, a singular Hajj.

Summary

Thus if the one living within the boundary were to perform the ‘Umra within the ‘months of Hajj’ and after cutting their hair they return home, there is no Hajj al-Tamatt’u for them. This is because they returned home while having no legal requirement to return to Mecca. [Ibid.]

Hope this helps
