Manners with the Qur’an

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

Do I need to have wudu when reciting Qur’an, and do I need to have wudu while holding and reading from a digital Qur’an?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Assalamu Alaykum wa Rahmatullah,

Wudu is not obligatory to recite the Qur’an. It is, however, superior and closer to propriety when possible. Wudu is obligatory when one wants to touch the Qur’an itself. [`Ala’ al-Din Abidin, al-Hadiyya al-`Ala’iyya]

A digital Qur’an is not, strictly speaking the ‘mus-haf’ (text of the Qur’an), and it is not obligatory to have wudu when touching it. It is, however, superior and closer to propriety when possible.

Wassalam,

Faraz Rabbani
