what is the hanafi position on drying oneself after wudu?
Answer:
Assalamu alaikum,
There is nothing wrong with drying oneself after wudu. As for the hadith that the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) was offered a towel after wudu and he refused it, this does not indicate it is disliked to dry oneself because other hadiths indicate that he (Allah bless him & give him peace) used dried himself at other times, and the initial basis is permissibility. This is confirmed by the established practice of many of the Companions (Allah be pleased with them), as mentioned by Ibn Abi Shayba in his Musannaf. They include Uthman, Hasan ibn Ali, and Anas (Allah be pleased with them), and many of the people of knowledge, as Ibn Qudama (Allah have mercy on him), the great Hanbali jurist, mentions in his masterly al-Mughni [Sarakhsi, al-Mabsut 1.73; Ibn Qudama, al-Mughni 1.95; Fatawa Hindiyya 1.9; Durr al-Mukhtar].
However, it is best not to do so completely, when there is no hardship involved (such as extreme cold or skin trouble), to leave some trace of the worship on one.
Walaikum assalam,
Faraz Rabbani.
