Expiation for Expiation?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

Growing up in the US, my parents were not religous people, they did not pray, nor obsereved any other practices except fasting. I didnt know anything of the religion except for that which was haram and halal. From maturity I lived a heedless life style, I broke many fasts … To use the worse case scenrio I would probably need to make up the last 10 months of ramadan. Only about 4 or 5 years ago I started learning about the religion, thanks to you brothers & sisters. Lets say I have to make up 10 months of ramadan with expiation, at 60 days per day of ramadan i would have to fast 180,000 days!!which is around 49 years!! Is there any type of expiation from that? I know I can feed 60 people instead for each day, but if i were to make a feast for 120 people it would cost me $1200, and I only make $1600. How much do i have to feed people? can I give them money instead, if yes how much? What should I do, please advice me?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Walaikum assalam wa rahmatullah,

I pray that this finds you well, and in the best of health and spirits. May Allah grant you all good and success in this life and the next.

Only one expiation is required for past errors. With that, one must make up the missed fasts.

That means you only have to feed 60 people once for all the days missed as an expiation, and then make up the single days, without feeding 60 for each day?
