Is consecutive (wisal) fasting permitted? Can it count as a make up fast?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

In the Name of Allah, with blessings and peace on the Messenger of Allah

Walaikum assalam wa rahmatullah,

I pray this finds you in the best of health and spirits.

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Do not fast consecutively.” [Bukhari and Muslim, from Anas (Allah be pleased with him)]

The continuous fasting (sawm al-wisal) that is prohibitively disliked (because of the Prophetic prohibition against it) is to fast two or more consecutive days without breaking the fast at night. [Shurunbulali, Maraqi al-Falah, 1.240]

However, if performed, such a fast would be legally valid, though sinful. If one had intended a make up fast for each day of such fasts, those make up fasts would be valid.

And Allah alone gives success.

Wassalam,

Faraz Rabbani
