Wudu: Not Sure

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

I am certain that I made wudu and certain that I broke wudu, but do not know whether I made wudu before breaking wudu or after breaking wudu. In this case do I need to make wudu?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Walaikum assalam,

Use your judgement. You have two choices: either decide that you did wudu AFTER breaking it, so you don’t have to do wudu; or, decide that you did it BEFORE, so you have to renew your wudu. Certainty is not lifted by doubt.

Wherever the Shariah calls for such a decision, you have only two options. Either this or that. No third option.

Wassalam,
Faraz.

Abu Usamah: Certainty is not lifted by doubt. You are certain that your wudu broke but in doubt as to whether you made wudu before or after breaking wudu. Hence you should redo your wudu.
