When praying alone, can I just ‘think’ of the Fatiha?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Qibla.com

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

When I pray alone (I am a woman), do I have to pronounce the fatiha and the following sura or should I read them in my mind only?

Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Walaikum assalam wa rahmatullah,

1. When praying alone, it is not valid to simply “think” of the Fatiha in one’s mind: it is a condition for the validity of the prayer that the Fatiha actually be “recited” by (minimally) moving one’s lips and (optimally) doing so at least such that one can hear oneself. [Ibn Abidin, Radd al-Muhtar]

2. As for the follower, see below

Wassalam,
Faraz Rabbani
