How to determine if feeling wind during wudhu or salaat is real or wiswas?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftisays.com
AsSalamu Alaikum,

I have a big problem with keeping my wudhu. I often find that when I go to perform my wudhu oir salaat, I feel wind or something coming out, or on the surface just before exiting. I never hear anything most of the time, however sometimes I am not sure whether i have smelt something or not. I dont feel like passing wind out of salaat or widhu nearly all the time, but as soon as i do namaaz or ablution, I feel like Im feeling wind. I know Im not Mathur because i dont get it out of salaah, but when i do feel it during namaaz, is it real or wiswas? Sometimes I think Shaytaan is making me think that its a smell of wind, but Im not sure. It is really affecting my Salaah and I dont want to indulged further into this disease, please can you answer my question as soon as possible.

Jazkallah Khair and May Allah Reward you!

Assalamu Alaikum

Al-jawab billahi at-taufeeq (the answer with Allah’s guidance)

According to Usoolul Fiqh (fundamental principles of Islamic jurisprudence)

1) “Al Yaqeen La Yazulu Illa Bil Yaqeen” (Certainty is only invalidated by another Certainty)

If you are certain that you have passed wind etc, your Wudhu is invalidated whether or not you hear or smell something.

2) “Al Yaqeen La Yazulu Bish Shak” (Certainty is not invalidated by doubt)

When a person makes Wudhu, the attribute of ritual purity (Taharah) is presumed to continue until it is vitiated. A mere doubt that it might have been vitiated is not sufficient to nullify Taharah. You should discard your doubts and continue praying.

(Al Ashbah Wan Nazair Pg. 60, Principles of Islamic Jurisprudence,Kamali)

Waswasa is from the Shaitan one should treat it with contempt and pay no attention to such thoughts and do not bother. If one gives a little attention to such thoughts, the Shaytan feels honoured. It has achieved its purpose of diverting one’s mind in wrong. One should never give into that. Simply treat such thoughts with contempt and ignore them.

Recite Ta’awudh (A’oodhu Billaah).

Recite La Ilaha IllAllahu Muhammadur Rasulullah.

And Only Allah Ta’ala Knows Best.
