Participating in the funeral rights of a non-Muslim

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: My wife is a converted Muslim and her father has recently died who was a Hindu. There are some rituals that only my wife can perform as she is the only child. I am not sure wether to allow her to perform that rituals which may involve a Puja as well. Can you please guide me what happen if she still perform such rituals despite knowing that I am not happy if she performs those.

Bismillaah

A: It is totally haraam for a Muslim to participate in the funeral rights of a non-Muslim. If one performs the prayers and rituals over the dead, this action will cause one to lose one’s Imaan. Hence it is impermissible for you to allow her to participate in the funeral rights or the burial of her deceased kaafir father.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
