Looking around in Salaah

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: If a person looks around in Salaah, what will be the position of his Salaah, will it be makrooh or will it break? Kindly explain the different situations i.e. if he only turned his face to the right or left during Salaah, or he turned his chest as well, or he only looked from the corner of his eye. Will there be any difference in the ruling of the above situations if there was a need for him to look?

Bismillaah

A: If the person had turned the chest away from the qiblah, the Salaah will break. If he had turned the face only, it will be makrooh-e-tahrimi and impermissible. Though in this case the Salaah will not break, however the reward of the Salaah will depreciate greatly.

If one had looked around during Salaah from the corner of his eye, the Salaah will be valid, however if it was done without any valid reason, it will be makrooh-e-tanzihi.

Note: When one stands to offer Salaah, one should perform the Salaah with complete devotion and concentration fulfilling all the postures in the proper manner. In proportion to the quality of the Salaah, one receives reward from Allah Ta’ala.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
