Organ donation and organ transplant

Answered according to Hanafi Fiqh by Muftionline.co.za

Q: Is organ donation allowed in Islam? I have a cousin who really wants to help people in need. If it is allowed, then under what circumstances is it allowed? And can you please give sources from the qur’an as well?

Bismillaah

A: Our bodies are an amaanat entrusted to us from the side of Allah Ta’aala. We are thus not permitted to deal in them freely as we wish. Instead, we are commanded to deal in them as Allah Ta’aala has commanded us. Shariat does not allow organ transplants. Hence, it is impermissible for one to donate his organs to someone. However, it is permissible for one to use the organs of animals provided the organs are not from a swine.

And Allah Ta’ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
