I work from home for Pizza Pizza. People call and I take their orders over the phone. I always try to offer veggie toppings. I send their order through internet to stores. Is this ḥarām or ḥalāl? My husband has no job so I am the one who is trying to support my family. Please reply.
Answer:
There are a couple of things to consider in your case.
- The true nature of your existing job
- Your current financial situation
In respect to taking orders for the company you work for, although you offer veggie toppings, the reality of the matter is that the customer, who is not always Muslim, will place an order for what he/she desires, which the vast majority of times is not ḥalāl. Hence aiding in serving what is prohibited is also prohibited. Allāh says,
“…do not cooperate in sin and aggression.” [Qur‘ān 5:2]
However since you are the current bread giver of your family and you are in the state of difficulty (ḥarj), I would not advise abandoning your job immediately. Rather you and your husband should both turn to Allāh and ask Him to provide you a pure and permissible alternative means of sustenance. Actively and sincerely seek it and once you find it give up this job.
