Answer:

Abu Hurairah (R.A.) narrates that the Prophet (S.A.W.) said:  “When the imam says ‘Ghairil Maghdhoobi ‘alaihim wa lad dhaalleen’, say ‘Aameen’.  Indeed the one whose ‘Aameen’ coincides with the ‘Aameen’ of the angels his past sins will be forgiven.”

In light of this Hadith it is said that the imam should say ‘Aameen’ softly because if the ‘Aameen’ was to be said loudly then the Prophet (S.A.W.) would not have made the Muqtadis’ (followers in Salaah) saying ‘Aameen’ subject to the imam’s saying ‘wa lad dhaalleen’.  In fact he would have made it subject to the imam’s saying ‘Aameen’.  (I’laa-us-Sunan, Vol. 2, Page 245)

‘Alqamah bin Waail narrates from his father that he performed Salaah behind the  Prophet (S.A.W.) and he heard him say ‘Aameen’ after reciting ‘Ghairil Maghdhoobi ‘alaihim wa lad dhaalleen’ and he lowered his voice in doing so.  (I’laa-us-Sunan, Vol. 2, Page 251)

Abu Waail says that Ali (R.A.) and Abdullah bin Mas’ood (R.A.) would not recite ‘Bismillah’, ‘Ta’awwuth’ and ‘Aameen’ loudly.  (I’laa-us-Sunan, Vol. 2, Page 211 and 249)

Abu Waail also narrates that Umar (R.A.) and Ali (R.A.) would not recite ‘Bismillah’ and ‘Aameen’ loudly.  (I’laa-us-Sunan, Vol. 2, Page 250)
