Is Castration Permissible?

Answered as per Hanafi Fiqh by Mahmoodiyah

Question:

Someone is mentally disable/retarded to the extent that he can not support himself but has sexual desires that make him irritable. Doctor has suggested
castrating him. What is the Islamic ruling in this matter? And if this person were a women then what would be the rulings?

Answer:

It is not permissible for any person to undergo castration.  There were Sahabah (R.A.) who did not have the financial means to make Nikah so they sought permission from Nabi (S.A.W.) to castrate themselves.  Nabi (S.A.W.) did not give permission.  That person, who is unable to make Nikah or is in such a condition due to which it is impossible to make Nikah then the Hadith commands that one should continuously fast.

If his passions or lust do not decrease by fasting and there is a great danger that he may commit adultery then the Fuqahaa (Jurists) have given permission for one to masturbate and this can be acquired by using any man-made instrument.  However to do so eagerly or to make it a habit is Makrooh (odious).  This law also applies to that female who is suffering similar difficulties.  It will also be permissible for him to marry a lady, fulfil his need and thereafter divorce her but he should clearly explain his intention prior to Nikah.

And Allah Ta’ala knows best
